electrolysis at Wasatch Integrative Medicine
every hair. for good.
Laser hair removal is powerful — but it has one significant limitation. It depends on pigment. If your hair is light, blonde, gray, red, or white, laser energy has nothing to target. If your facial hair is driven by hormonal imbalance, laser can sometimes make the problem worse, not better. For these situations — and for anyone who wants the absolute certainty of truly permanent results — electrolysis is the answer.
Electrolysis is the only method of hair removal recognized by the FDA as permanently effective. It does not reduce hair. It does not slow regrowth. It destroys each individual follicle, permanently, regardless of hair color, skin tone, or the reason the hair is growing. Once a follicle is treated, it does not come back.
At Wasatch Integrative Medicine, electrolysis is performed with a careful, personalized approach focused on your comfort and your results. Every session is precise, methodical, and tailored to the areas and hair you want gone — for good.

overview
what electrolysis can treat
Electrolysis is effective on all hair colors and all skin types, making it the most universally applicable hair removal method available. Common treatment areas include:
Face: Upper lip, chin, jawline, sideburns, eyebrows, hairline, cheeks, and neck
Body: Underarms, bikini and Brazilian, abdomen, chest, back, arms, legs, and feet
Specialty applications:
-
-
- Light, gray, red, blonde, or white hair that laser cannot effectively target
- Hormonally driven facial hair in women, including those with PCOS or hormonal imbalances
- Precision shaping of brows, hairline, or beard edges
- Transgender hair removal, including facial and body hair
- Finishing work after laser to address remaining fine or light hairs
-
Electrolysis works on every hair color and every skin tone. If laser is not an option for you, electrolysis almost certainly is!
key benefits
truly permanent
Electrolysis is the only FDA-recognized permanent hair removal method. Each treated follicle is permanently destroyed — it will not regenerate.
works on all skin tones
Because electrolysis does not rely on pigment contrast between hair and skin, it is safe and effective for every skin tone without the risk adjustments required by laser.
precision treatment
Because each follicle is treated individually, electrolysis offers a level of precision that is unmatched — ideal for detailed areas like brows, hairline shaping, and upper lip.
works on all hair colors
Light, blonde, gray, red, and white hair that cannot be treated with laser responds fully to electrolysis. Hair color is completely irrelevant to how electrolysis works.
ideal for hormonally driven hair
For women experiencing facial hair growth related to hormonal changes or conditions like PCOS, electrolysis is the safer and more effective choice. Laser can sometimes stimulate additional growth when hormones are involved; electrolysis eliminates the follicle regardless of what is driving it.
no ongoing maintenance
Once a follicle is treated, it is gone. There is no maintenance schedule, no package renewals, and no touch-ups required for successfully treated hair.

Session Details
A licensed electrologist inserts a very fine, sterile probe alongside the hair shaft into the natural opening of the hair follicle. A small, precisely controlled electrical current is then delivered to the base of the follicle, where it permanently destroys the dermal papilla — the tissue responsible for producing new hair growth. The hair is then gently removed with tweezers.
Because the current is delivered directly to each individual follicle, the treatment is effective regardless of hair color or skin tone. No pigment absorption is required.
Like laser, electrolysis is most effective on follicles in the active growth phase. Because hair grows in cycles and not all follicles are active at the same time, a series of sessions spaced over time is needed to achieve full clearance in any given area.
first visit
Your first visit is an Initial Consult plus treatment. Your electrologist will review the area you want treated, discuss your hair removal history, and begin treatment in the same appointment. There is no separate standalone consultation — you start making progress from day one.
Before each session, allow a small amount of hair growth so the follicle can be properly located and targeted. Do not wax, tweeze, or use depilatory creams in the weeks before your appointment — these methods remove the hair from the follicle and make treatment less effective. Shaving between sessions is fine.
Treatment
During treatment, you will feel a brief sensation at each follicle — often described as a mild heat or a small zap. Sensitivity varies by area and by individual. Most patients find the experience very manageable, particularly in smaller or less sensitive areas. Your electrologist can adjust intensity settings to balance effectiveness with comfort.
After your Treatment
After your session, you may notice mild redness or slight swelling in the treated area. This is a normal response and typically resolves within a few hours. Avoid touching the treated area, applying makeup immediately after facial treatments, or exposing the area to direct sun without SPF protection.
Progress builds session by session. With each appointment, fewer active follicles remain in the treated area. Full clearance timelines vary depending on the size of the area, hair density, and how consistently sessions are scheduled — your electrologist will give you a realistic estimate after your first visit.

frequently asked questions

How is electrolysis different from laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal works by targeting pigment in the hair follicle — which means it requires dark hair to be effective. Electrolysis delivers a direct electrical current to each individual follicle, permanently destroying it regardless of hair color or skin tone. Laser provides permanent hair reduction; electrolysis provides true permanent removal. They are complementary treatments and many patients use both — laser for the bulk of dark hair across large areas, and electrolysis to finish off remaining light or fine hairs.
Is electrolysis really permanent?
Yes. Electrolysis is the only hair removal method with FDA recognition as genuinely permanent. When a follicle is successfully treated, it is destroyed and will not produce new hair. This is distinct from laser, which provides permanent reduction but may require occasional maintenance as hormonal changes can activate previously dormant follicles.
Does it hurt?
The sensation varies by area and individual. Most patients describe it as a brief warmth or mild zap at each follicle — noticeable, but very manageable. Sensitive areas like the upper lip or bikini line may be more uncomfortable than areas like the arms or legs. Your electrologist can adjust the current intensity to find the right balance between comfort and effectiveness, and many patients find that sensitivity decreases as sessions progress and the hair becomes finer.
How many sessions will i need?
This depends on the size of the area, the density of the hair, and how consistently you can schedule appointments. Smaller areas like the upper lip or chin may reach full clearance in a series of sessions over several months. Larger areas take longer. Because hair grows in cycles and only active follicles can be treated at each session, patience and consistency are the most important factors. Your electrologist will give you a realistic timeline estimate after your first visit.
Why can't i wax or tweeze before my appointment?
Waxing and tweezing pull the hair out of the follicle entirely, which removes the guide the electrologist uses to insert the probe accurately. Without hair present in the follicle, the treatment cannot be performed effectively. Shaving is fine between sessions because it leaves the follicle intact.
I have tried laser but still have significant hair remaining. Can electrolysis help?
Absolutely — this is one of the most common reasons patients come to us for electrolysis. Laser is highly effective for dark, coarse hair but often leaves behind lighter, finer, or more stubborn hairs that do not absorb laser energy well. Electrolysis treats these remaining hairs precisely and permanently, regardless of color or texture. It is an excellent finishing step after a laser series.
Can i combine electrolysis with other services at wasatch integrative medicine?
Yes. Electrolysis pairs naturally with DiolazeXL laser for patients who want to use laser for large-area dark hair and electrolysis for detail work or light hairs. For patients who are also hormone therapy patients, we recommend discussing your hormonal history with your electrologist — understanding what is driving hair growth helps set realistic expectations and sequence treatment appropriately.
